UPDATE: Secret band announced! Flobots will be the secret, well, not so secret now, band playing at the Big Gig this weekend.
This year Channel 93.3’s Big Gig concert in Denver at Fiddler’s Green should be a really good one because the
headliner is The Offspring.
Checkout my review of their new album if you haven’t already.
What is The Big Gig you may be asking? Well it a fun concert channel 93.3 puts together. This year so far the bands playing will be Dropping Daylight, The Spill Canvas, Dropkick Murphys, Paramore and The Offspring. It’s a day in the hot sun at Fiddler’s Green (formerly Coors Amphitheater - thank goodness that changed. Maybe this will mean that since Coors is no longer paying to put their name on it they will start serving better beer!).
One thing is you get a lot of bang for your buck - the ticket prices are cheap compared to other concerts that feature multiple bands. I’ve got a few tips for you for attending a concert at Fiddler’s Green that may prove to be helpful!
First off, lawn tickets are cheap and can be a great way to go. Keep in mind that the event starts in the afternoon during the hottest part of the day. Take a blanket to sit on. It’s worth hauling it in. They will actually have vendors walking around selling them to those who wish they had brought their own. If it rained the day before or they watered the grass it might be wet or muddy and you’ll want that blanket.
You will sit facing the mountains, which is beautiful, but that also means facing the sun as it’s setting. Take sunscreen and be prepared to be hot, hot, hot if you are in the lawn. That’s why we are getting seats this year. It was a bit miserable last year and those seats are in the shade pretty early on.
Also, the bathroom situation there can mean long lines (especially for the women). If you are in the lawn, go towards the back - all the way. There are hidden bathrooms there that are huge and no one seems to know about. Also water fountains for refilling your water bottles. Don’t keep buying the expensive water.
In all honesty I would opt for getting seats because the slope of the lawn can get old after a few hours. It’s hard to stand on and you keep sliding down. It is great if you have a big group of people going though. It’s not so great if you aren’t in a big group but somehow end up next to that big group…..
Parking. You shouldn’t have to pay for it as there is free parking. You just have to find the free lots - you already paid for that parking with your ticket. Don’t be fooled and pay again. There are plenty of lots that free of charge but you’ll see a bunch first that aren’t - keep going!
This year they will have the Local’s Stage again which was set up outside the main venue. If you can, you might want to check that out earlier in the day.
If there is any band you aren’t familiar with I would suggest checking them out ahead of time - always makes it more fun when you’ve listened to some of the music ahead of time.
The Offspring will be a big draw this year, so if you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, don’t wait!
Locals playing have been announced and Skyfox will be on the main stage. I listened to them a little bit and I really like them. The others that will be playing the smaller, Locals Only stage are:
Life In Electric, The Heyday, Rough Draft, For Love of Ivy, Saving Verona
