I recently was reading a thread on a message board about annoying things people do at the office. It’s been a long time since I’ve been in an office environment (16 years!) but I could relate. I found some of the comments hilarious because no matter how small the “office” is, close quarters and being around the same person day after day can have the same effect.

I have worked from home doing bookkeeping for a small construction company for about 3 years now. About a year ago we moved our home office space up from the basement to the spare bedroom, which is great - I can look out and see the mountains. I only had to share this space with my dear hubby in the evenings or weekends and it was never an issue.

Then we decided to start a small side business and not long after, he left the company he was with for 16 years because he needed a break and wanted to do consulting. This is when things started to go downhill….

So here’s my list of things “co-workers” do to annoy in the “office”:

1. Breathing. Okay, I know that sounds ridiculous, but I seem to be hyper sensitive to things and when he would put his headphones on, for some odd reason his breathing became heavy and loud.

2. Loud Talker. I manage 2 phones, he has the one. I would have to leave the room if I was on the phone and he got on the phone. His voice CARRIES. When he worked for his previous company, they put him in the office the furthest away from everyone for that very reason. So imagine being in the same small room.

3. Lunch choice of fish. Stinks up the whole house. Then has the cat in a tizzy. That’s an extra element - a cat - you don’t get in a normal work place.

4. Pandora station - what the hell? Is that a Nickelback station he’s chosen?

5. Certain gastronomical events. We’ll leave it at that.

Things finally came to a head yesterday when he was on a conference call for the new company he just took a position with. I had to be shut out of the room. Running payroll was a bit of a problem. We came to the conclusion that he needed a space and so we started the set up in the basement. (We’ll see what filters up through the vents.) He’s got his little cave. He can do all those things without receiving dirty looks any longer.

In the meantime, I know he’ll miss me and it will be tough to not look over and see my cheery demeanor everyday and be around my positive outlook. In fact, I bet he’s blogging about it right now on his own blog. But it’s really what’s best. He’ll muddle through somehow.
