Why I Run

Category: Family & Home |

So I’m an avid runner. My husband says I’m a hardcore runner, only because I tune people out while I run and completely focus on the task at hand. Yes, I’ve been known to run right by people we know and not even see them. Although I’ll have to admit, even if I did, I would only smile and wave - I wouldn’t stop.

I started running 3 years ago. Before that I always thought about runners what I now think about people who do a lot of biking - “Why in the world would they want to do that? Looks like torture…..”.

Three years later I can’t even remember what made me start to run. Maybe it was the slowing down of the metabolism when I hit my mid 30’s that made me want to find something to do exercise wise that allowed me to keep my current weight, but still eat anything I wanted. Running has pretty much accomplished that.

Aside from all that though there was a definite, unexpected side benefit. I had been diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse years earlier. At the time, I had no symptoms. It was discovered during a regular medical exam. Years later I began to develop severe heart palpitations and dizziness, along with other symptoms as well. It would be very disconcerting to be sitting on the couch and not be able to catch my breath. Somehow I discovered that running seemed to keep that regulated for me. As long as I regularly run, I have no symptoms at all. So now I try and run 4 miles a day.

I feel extremely lucky because the views I am able to enjoy while running are spectacular. Running at altitude also adds a whole new angle to lung capacity.

One thing that I never thought I would love so much was the Christmas gift my son bought me. He bought me the Apple Nike + iPod Sport Kit. It’s a piece that goes in your Nike shoe (embedded in the inside) and another piece that attaches to an Apple Nano. I never thought I’d get so addicted to it - but I don’t like to run without. It tracks my runs, keeps track of calories burned, etc. It’s a great motivating tool.

And on that note - I need to go get my run in now that all the tornado warnings have expired and hail stopped. Gotta love livin’ in Colorado…..
