I feel like I can’t keep up here - things have been busy with personal stuff and work. But we finally had a weekend day to do something fun since no cars were out on rent and nothing else was going on.
First off, Sunday morning, Shane decided to take the Lotus out for a spin. We’ve had that car for a year and a half now, but since it’s really a car for the business, he hasn’t taken it out personally. He mentioned he was going out and I jokingly remarked that he didn’t invite me…..
Well, he wanted me to go but I knew he’d probably be sorry. That car scares me and not having any control when someone else is behind the wheel is scary - but I thought, “what the hell”. The weather was so incredibly beautiful here…..
Our first stop was at a cemetery. If you haven’t checked out our Halloween website, then you wouldn’t
understand. I’ll blog on there about our visit and why we stopped. But an old church and historic cemetery is such a peaceful place. It really was beautiful.
Then off to the canyons for a quick drive. Dylan didn’t even know we were gone. This is the beauty of having a teenager. You can go, have an enjoyable morning, and they are still asleep when you get back. Shane was, for the most part, very good, and I, for the most part, only screamed and closed my eyes a couple of times.
We made a stop along the river - it was really beautiful and the runoff right now is great.
We headed back home to gather up Dylan and go on a hike somewhere.
Now, when you have a teenager, you really have to finesse how you go about breaking it that you are all going on a hike as a family. It’s not like he jumps up and down and clicks his heals out of excitement. My first tact was to go and ask, “Are you awake?”. Well, he was now…..
Then I asked, “What do you want me to make you for lunch - pbj or a meat sandwich?”. Notice I didn’t tell him what we were doing. It was a brilliant move, considering he was half awake. He figured it out after a while, but was surprisingly compliant.
So we headed up to Rocky Mountain National Park. We didn’t have much of a plan, and frankly, we were getting a late start, so the first two trail ideas were a bust since there was no parking. We ended up going up a part of the Lawn Lake Trail, quite lovely and we’ve decided it would be an easy backpacking trip in the future. Since the rivers are running high right now, it was wonderful to just sit on a rock by the river and take it all in. After that it was down to an easy little trail to take a picture by the Aluvial Fan. We just wanted a quick picture of the bottom part of the river that we just hiked along. This seemed to be the trail that most people, who aren’t in shape, hike since it’s just a little piece.
Notice how Shane managed to make it look like no one else was there.
Our final leg
of the day was to drive up a portion of Trail Ridge Road. This was Dylan’s idea. Still can’t figure out why - you’d have thought he was in a hurry to get home. We got stuck behind someone who thought the signs warning of unstable snowfields meant they would be driving THROUGH them apparently. They stopped dead in the center of the road and just stayed there until everyone started honking. Those out of town plates…..
It seemed like a lot of sitting in the car all day - but gas be damned! We were finally able to get out and enjoy why we love living here in the first place.
