The Offspring released their new CD June 17. I had really been looking forward to this new CD. The first single they released before the CD came out, Hammerhead, was amazing. So I had high hopes for the album as a whole.

I absolutely have not been disappointed. I love the album. There is a good mix of songs. Some of the usual, hard cutting, fast paced songs that they are so good at. But some also surprising slow ballads. One in particular, “Fix You”, is almost heartbreaking. A beautiful song - one I hope they DO NOT release as a single because I think you should have to get the album to be able to enjoy this song. There are a couple of songs, that are up there as my favorites, that most likely will not be released as singles either, mostly because so much would have to be bleeped out that the songs just wouldn’t be the same. One of those is “You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid” and the other is “Stuff is Messed Up”. Trust me though, that is NOT how they say it in the song.

I can’t remember where I heard it, but something to the effect that they would mostly be playing their older songs while on tour this summer because the fans wouldn’t be familiar with the new songs yet. I hope this isn’t the case. I immediately loved this album and want to hear some of these songs live - although I also suspect they’ll come back around later in the year. Hopefully they’ll come back to Denver, even though we are one of the lucky few places they will be coming to this summer.

But if they only play one song off of the new album at the 93.3 Big Gig Concert here in Denver I hope it’s “Stuff Is Messed Up” and that the whole crowd gets involved. So if you are reading this and going to that concert - get this album and learn that song! And if you’re having trouble getting the words then go to The Offspring’s website - the lyrics are here.

Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace gets 5 stars from me.

If you want more info about the concert coming up in Denver on July 26 and who will be opening for The Offspring, go check out my blog about it. Maybe I’ll see you there!
