So this past Wednesday night we went to see Stone Tempe Pilots at Red Rocks. I’ll admit right now, this is the first time I have ever seen them in concert, so I have nothing previous to base my review on. Also, while I like their music, I can’t say i would normally have picked to go see them. We made the ch
oice because we really wanted to see a concert at Red Rocks this season and there weren’t a whole lot of artists coming that we liked. So we chose this concert.
I had read a few other reviews and one complaint was Scott Weiland was pretty stoned in the latest concerts. So we were prepared if he came out in that condition. And from what it looked like to us, that’s exactly the
condition he came out in. It seemed the mike stand came in pretty handy at times to keep him in an upright position. The first two songs he sang were pretty rough sounding. Then he seemed to be getting in a better groove/voice from there on out.
Musically, it was a pretty good concert. Couple things though that bothered me a bit. First, his mannerisms
on stage (is it dancing he tries to do or prancing?). Like I said, I’ve never seen them live, so maybe, even when he’s sober, he still acts/dances like that around the stage, but it was pretty bad. He should have just stayed in
one spot.
Secondly, he really has no interaction with the audience - spends a lot of time with his back to the audience actually. There were a few times where he would get up close, but for the most part, I was amazed at the lack of back and forth. I guess I’m so used to going to concerts where the artists are talking in between songs, or just working hard to get the crowd involved. Although maybe it was for the best because he got pretty confused with one song he was introducing.
The background got annoying after a while. It was a bit much with the psychedelic lights going on. It did make for some cool pictures though.
Overall, it was a pretty good concert for a reunion tour. I’m thinking I need to stay away from those in the future. It was a much older crowd, very subdued. Not that I was expecting anything like when we saw Rise Against at Red Rocks - but still. A plastic beer bottle got thrown on stage and Scott picked it up and seemed to be a bit pissed that someone did that. Good grief - it’s a concert! I guess just coming off of Warped Tour where EVERYTHING is thrown, it seemed a little strange.
Here is some video our son took that night. I think it showed some of the few times he was facing us. I realize I’m exaggerating that aspect a bit, but even when he was facing the crowd, he seemed a bit blank….

I was at this show also and saw none of the “pretty stoned” Scott Weiland. We were sitting in the 4th row, center stage, so we had an excellent view. If you have never seen STP before and are not an STP fan you may not know any more than what is printed in the newspapers, tabloids, etc.
STP are one of the best live bands out right now. Weiland’s stage presence is equal to Freddie Mercury, David Bowie and Mick Jagger. He truly is one of the greatest showmen out there. I saw Weiland spend a lot of time running from one side of the stage to the other to bring in the crowd’s participation. He also encouraged the crowd to sing along. And, I remember an excellent impromptu of “We Will Rock You” where he had the crowd participate.
Please don’t knock a band that you don’t know much about, it only makes you look ignorant. Also, I would suggest that you do not make up things that you saw, like a “pretty stoned” person because the majority of concert goers don’t know what is going on with the performers. And there are quite a few annoying concert goers that are far away, drinking beer and can’t even remember what they really saw, so they tend to exaggerate.
Actually, I had not read any tabloids or newspapers - I read other concert reviews before hand from others who went to previous concerts and were extremely disappointed.
True, I had never been to one of their concerts - but if that is his normal demeanor, then I’m glad.
I’m always amazed people get so riled up when someone didn’t have the same experience at a concert they did, or doesn’t like the same music.
Feel free to start your own website and post your own review. My website, my personal experience and feelings.
And for the record, I wasn’t drinking that night. The only thing that might have effected me was all the potheads in the crowd around us.
